Last week, Northside junior pitcher Sydney Green tossed a one-hit shutout in a win against Southside.

On Tuesday, Green bettered that performance as she threw a no-hitter in the Lady Bears’ 7-0 win at home against Little Rock Central.

“Sydney has been real dependable on the mound. ... She’s been consistently pitching well, hitting her spots, changing up speeds, putting a little movement on it, so she’s really come through for us these last couple of games,” Northside coach Kelly Nickell said.

Green struck out nine batters in the win while throwing a total of 83 pitches, 55 of those going for strikes.

Nickell added another asset Green brings when pitching is her ability to field.

“Every single game, the umpires will come to me and say, ‘I’ve never seen a pitcher play defense like her,’” Nickell said. “She plays her position, not only pitching.

“She will grab every bunt hit in front of her, even on the first-base line, she will dive for pop-ups that are short. ... She has such good range, she has such a good glove.”

Green also shined at the plate in Tuesday’s win, going 3-for-4.

Every player in the Lady Bear lineup got a hit, with seven of them getting at least two hits. Another player Nickell singled out was sophomore catcher Maddy Worden, who went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

“I have put her in and out of the lineup back and forth several times. ... I took her out and had someone (designated hitting) for her and that kind of jolted her a little bit,” Nickell said. “She didn’t like to sit, she said, ‘Coach, what can I do to be back in the lineup,’ and I said we’ve got to really work on your timing, you’ve got to turn your hips more, you’ve got to be more aggressive.

“So she has really worked on that and I reluctantly put her back in the lineup this weekend and she really came through for us and then (Tuesday) she was our shining star with a triple, double and single.”

Tuesday’s win, coupled with Southside’s loss to Cabot, vaulted the Lady Bears into fifth place in the 7A-Central with a 3-6 record, as Southside is now 2-6 in the conference. The Mavericks will play at home in a doubleheader against North Little Rock today, which was moved up from Friday due to the possibility of inclement weather.

Northside is still scheduled to play Friday at Mount St. Mary, which has only one conference win, but that happened to come against the Lady Bears at Grizzly Field.
